CBN Holds Benchmark Interest Rate at 26.5% as MPC Maintains Tight Monetary Stance

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), the country’s benchmark interest rate, at 26.5 percent, leaving borrowing costs unchanged after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) concluded its 306th meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso announced the decision during a post-meeting press briefing, saying the committee resolved to keep the key policy rate unchanged.

The latest decision marks the second time in 2026 that the MPC has maintained the benchmark interest rate, reflecting the apex bank’s continued cautious approach to monetary policy amid efforts to sustain macroeconomic stability and manage inflationary pressures.

Further details are expected as the CBN releases the full communiqué from the meeting.
