The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution exonerating former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo, of allegations of embezzlement that featured in the report of the ad hoc committee which led to his removal from office on January 23, 2024.
The resolution followed the presentation of the report of the Committee of the Whole House by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Lateefat Bolanle Ajayi, on a motion filed by Oluomo before the Assembly on March 31, 2026. After presenting the report, the Deputy Speaker moved for its adoption, a motion seconded by Yusuf Amosun and unanimously approved by members through a voice vote.
According to the report, “the House observed that the issue of embezzlement of funds was not part of the notice of removal served on him and cannot be established against him.” It further noted that the Assembly took legislative notice of Oluomo’s plea contained in paragraph four of his motion, in which he urged lawmakers to either exonerate him of the allegation of embezzlement or provide evidence, including facts and figures, to substantiate the claim in line with Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
The report stated that, after reviewing the available evidence, the House found no basis for the allegation and consequently withdrew embezzlement as one of the reasons for Oluomo’s removal. It added: “Furthermore, in the spirit of camaraderie, oneness and unity, this honourable House resolves and overturns the said removal of Rt. Hon. Oluomo, Olakunle Taiwo from office and commutes the same into a resignation.”
Oluomo, who represents Ifo State Constituency, was removed from office on January 23, 2024, after 18 of the 26 members of the Assembly voted in favour of his impeachment during a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Lateefat Ajayi (APC, Yewa South). He was accused of gross misconduct, highhandedness, lack of transparency and focus, financial misappropriation, and pursuing personal interests. With Tuesday’s resolution, the Assembly has withdrawn the allegation of embezzlement and reclassified his exit from office as a resignation rather than an impeachment.
