Reigning champions fight back to beat England 2-1
Defending champions Argentina scored twice in the closing stages to come from behind and defeat England 2-1, booking their place in next Sunday’s final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Spain.
All three goals came after the break in a thrilling semi-final that looked destined to go England’s way before Argentina staged a dramatic late comeback.
England broke the deadlock through Anthony Gordon, whose well-taken finish rewarded a bright second-half display and put the Three Lions within touching distance of a first World Cup final since 1966.
However, after taking the lead, England retreated too deep into their own half, inviting sustained pressure from the South Americans. Argentina gradually took control of possession and continued to probe for an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off when Enzo Fernández restored parity in the closing minutes, giving the reigning world champions fresh belief as England struggled to regain their composure.
Less than seven minutes later, Argentina completed the turnaround. Lautaro Martínez found the decisive goal with a clinical finish to spark wild celebrations among the Albiceleste supporters and send Lionel Scaloni’s men into another World Cup final.
The late double turned the contest on its head, breaking English hearts and underlining Argentina’s resilience and championship pedigree.
Argentina will now face European champions Spain in Sunday’s final as they seek to successfully defend the World Cup title they won in Qatar in 2022, while England will take on France in the third-place play-off.
