President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this September, marking his first appearance at the annual gathering of world leaders in two years.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed the President’s participation on Wednesday after a meeting with Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
According to the ambassador, Tinubu has confirmed his attendance and will use the global platform to highlight the achievements of his administration’s economic reform programme.
“The President has generously agreed to attend the UNGA meeting of the United Nations,” Ibrahim said.
“It is significant because Mr President has a speech to give to the whole world about the reform success in Nigeria. Nigeria will be effectively present at UNGA.”
Ambassador Ibrahim revealed that the President’s address is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. New York time, allowing Nigerians and the international community to follow the speech live.
Beyond addressing the General Assembly, Tinubu is expected to participate in a series of high-level meetings focusing on key global issues, including energy, education and healthcare. However, officials said efforts are being made to ensure the President’s schedule remains manageable during the event.
The annual UN General Assembly brings together heads of state and government from across the world to deliberate on global challenges, strengthen international cooperation and outline priorities for the year ahead. Tinubu’s participation is expected to provide Nigeria with an opportunity to showcase its economic reforms and engage with world leaders on issues of mutual interest.
