The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his declaration that he was ready to “fight to the finish” politically, urging him to channel the same determination toward tackling Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party argued that the President’s priority should be defeating terrorists, bandits and kidnappers rather than engaging in political battles with the opposition.
The ADC said Nigerians were more concerned about the persistent wave of killings, kidnappings and attacks across the country and expected decisive leadership from the Federal Government to restore security.
The party described the President’s remarks as ill-timed, noting that they were made during a meeting with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly after gunmen reportedly killed at least 30 residents of Naridon community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the statement, the tragic attack, which allegedly left homes destroyed and several families displaced, underscored the urgent need for stronger government action against violent criminal groups.
The ADC maintained that the President was elected to protect lives and property, insisting that the nation’s greatest challenge remained insecurity rather than political rivalry.
“Nigerians did not elect a Commander-in-Chief to become the nation’s chief issuer of condolence statements,” the party said.
It added: “Mr President, the fight Nigerians elected you to lead is not against the opposition. It is against the terrorists, kidnappers and armed criminals who continue to kill innocent citizens and destabilise communities across the country.”
The opposition party called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to combat insecurity and reassure citizens that their safety remains the administration’s foremost priority.
