Nigeria has called for a coordinated continental response to recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, urging the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to escalate the matter to the African Union (AU).
President Bola Tinubu made the appeal while addressing the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Lungi, Sierra Leone, stressing that xenophobia has no place in Africa and must be unequivocally condemned.

Nigeria and Ghana remain among the countries most affected by repeated attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, with many Nigerians reportedly killed, injured, or stripped of their livelihoods through the looting of their businesses, prompting the evacuation of affected citizens.
Nationals of neighbouring Southern African countries, including Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Botswana, have also suffered similar attacks, underscoring the need for a united African response to protect citizens and strengthen continental solidarity.
