Spain Stun France to Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

European champions Spain produced a disciplined and clinical performance to defeat France 2-0 and secure a place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The victory sends La Roja into only the second World Cup final in their history, having previously reached and won the tournament in South Africa in 2010.

France entered the semi-final as favourites after an impressive unbeaten run from the group stage, but Spain frustrated Didier Deschamps’ side with a composed display and took control of the contest in the first half.

Spain broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal inside the area. The young winger had cleverly beaten Digne to the ball before being brought down, leaving the referee with no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Despite boasting attacking stars such as Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, France struggled to break through Spain’s well-organised defence marshalled by Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi and Pedro Porro. Mbappe, who came into the match level with Lionel Messi on eight goals in the tournament, was kept largely quiet throughout the encounter.

France enjoyed spells of possession and attempted to dictate play, but Spain remained composed and grew in confidence with every passing minute. The European champions controlled the midfield, with Rodri once again delivering a commanding performance by dictating the tempo and disrupting France’s attacking rhythm.

Any hopes of a French comeback after the break quickly faded when Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the 58th minute with a superbly taken goal that effectively sealed the victory.

France’s problems were compounded by an injury to William Saliba as Les Bleus fell short in their bid to return to the World Cup final after their defeat to Argentina in Qatar 2022.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente continues to enhance his growing reputation on the international stage. Having guided Spain to the UEFA Euro 2024 title, he now stands on the brink of leading La Roja to a second major international trophy.

Spain will face either England or defending champions Argentina in Sunday’s final as they bid to win their second FIFA World Cup title, while France will contest the third-place play-off on Saturday.
