President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, granting pay increases of between 30 and 80 per cent in a move aimed at strengthening troop welfare and boosting morale across the military.
The new salary package, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 officers and soldiers serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force.
According to a statement issued by the State House on Tuesday, the salary adjustment is based on rank, with senior officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—receiving a 30 per cent increase.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will receive a 50 per cent salary adjustment, while personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent increase, representing the highest increment under the new structure.
The review will increase the Federal Government’s annual military wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
President Tinubu said the decision underscores his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President stated.
He reaffirmed his administration’s determination to continue investing in the modernisation of the Armed Forces through the acquisition of advanced weapons, improved equipment and cutting-edge technology to enhance operational effectiveness.
According to the President, lasting peace and national development can only be achieved through a secure environment, stressing that his government remains focused on providing the military and other security agencies with the resources needed to confront emerging security challenges.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
The President urged officers and soldiers to view the enhanced remuneration as a demonstration of the Federal Government’s appreciation for their patriotism and unwavering service, expressing confidence that the Armed Forces would continue to play a decisive role in restoring lasting peace and stability across the country.
