The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on residents to resist any attempt to impose governorship candidates from outside the state ahead of the 2027 election, insisting that only leaders with deep roots in Ogun can effectively drive its development.
Speaking during an interview on Eagle 102.5 FM in Abeokuta on Wednesday, the party’s state chairman, Abayomi Tella, said the PDP’s “Ogun for Ogun” campaign was designed to promote indigenous leadership and ensure the state is governed by people who understand its history, culture and aspirations.
According to him, effective governance requires a leader who is familiar with the people, their challenges and the state’s developmental priorities.
Tella argued that individuals with longstanding ties to Ogun are better positioned to make decisions that reflect the interests of residents, stressing that such leaders are more likely to build inclusive administrations and harness the state’s potential.
He warned that candidates without strong connections to Ogun could prioritise outside interests and fill key government positions with associates who lack an understanding of the state’s peculiar needs.
The PDP chairman urged voters to remain vigilant and reject what he described as attempts to impose “outsiders” as governor, expressing confidence that Ogun residents are politically aware enough to make independent decisions at the ballot box.
Tella also dismissed concerns over the membership status of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo in the PDP, maintaining that her admission into the party complied fully with the Electoral Act and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He said Obasanjo completed the necessary processes before the stipulated deadline after leaving her previous political platform, insisting there was no breach of electoral regulations.
